Le ruote panoramiche sono da sempre un simbolo delle più grandi metropoli nel mondo: il London Eye, il Riesenrad di Vienna, la Beijing Great Wheel costruita in Cina nel 2009 e ad oggi, la più alta del mondo… le loro altezze sono l’emblema della città, punto di vedute mozzafiato fin dalla prima storica costruzione: la Ferris Wheel realizzata nel 1893 a Chicago.

La frontiera di oggi, però, non è più solo il primato in altezza! Infatti, vincitore del 2011 Skyscraper Competition, indetto dal magazine Evolo di New York è “LO2P: Recycling Center” di Nuova Delhi. Non solo il progetto di una ruota panoramica, ma una turbina gigante che fa da bio-polmone per una città in continua crescita con 13 milioni di abitanti e ad alti livelli di smog. Questa proposta, firmata dal team francese Atelier CMJN di Julien Combes e Gaël Brulé, è a tutti gli effetti una nuova tendenza nel settore “eco-friendly in architecture”.

L’idea dietro al progetto è il riciclo di vecchie auto provenienti da tutta l’India, utilizzate come materiale per l’edificazione della ruota, per lo più costituita di metallo. Il fine ultimo della costruzione circolare, dal design fuori dal comune, è la purificazione dell’aria in modo naturale, che avviene attraverso una serie di serre di grandi dimensioni ed altri filtri rotanti necessari per catturate le particelle nocive. Ma non solo, il calore di scarto e l’anidride carbonica prodotte, sono anch’esse riciclate per la coltivazione delle piante, che a loro volta producono bio-combustibili.

Panoramic wheels have always been famous landmarks in big cities across the world: the London Eye, the Riesenrad in Vienna, the Beijing Great Wheel built in China in 2009 and, to this day, the tallest in the world. Their heights are often regarded as the symbol of the city itself, as well as a look-out spot for breathtaking views ever since the construction of the very first wheel: the Ferris Wheel built in Chicago in 1893.

However, today the new frontier is no longer just height! In fact the winner of the 2011 Skyscraper Competition, launched by the New York magazine Evolo is the “LO2P: Recycling Center” in New Delhi. It is not only a panoramic wheel, but a giant turbine that serves as a bio-lung for a fast-growing metropolis with 13 million inhabitants and high levels of pollution. This project, signed by the French team of Atelier CMJN of Julien Combes and Gaël Brulé, gives a new meaning to being “eco-friendly in architecture”.

The idea behind the project is to recycle the old cars coming from all corners of India and use them as a construction material for the wheel, which is mostly made of metal. The ultimate goal is to build a uniquely designed circular construction for natural air purification performed through a series of big structures and other required rotating filters that capture hazardous particles suspended in the air. But it is not just that.
