Lo studio americano Oppenheim ci sbalordisce con un progetto per un nuovo lodge all’insegna del lusso e sostenibilità: il Wadi Rum Resort nel deserto della Giordania.Wadi Rum, o Valle della Luna, è una delle destinazioni più famose della Giordania, un paesaggio di sabbia e roccia di incontaminata bellezza, in gran parte abitata da beduini, ma anche con un afflusso costante di turisti. Il progetto mira a stabilire un nuovo punto di riferimento per la progettazione, dove il design si fonde perfettamente con il deserto circostante conservando l’autenticità della cultura e del local habitat. Il design incorpora strutture per la conservazione dell’acqua e la raccolta in modo che il lodge sia in grado di gestire le risorse locali disponibili.
L’architettura contemporanea in Medio Oriente ci ha abituato ad opere architettoniche a firma di archistar, per la maggior parte situati in centri urbani, con torri e hotel da 5 stelle e più, situati in località esotiche, così da garantire un successo culturale ed economico. Ma al di fuori delle grandi città la progettazione assume confini diversi. Il progetto di Chad Oppenheim ha sbaragliato la concorrenza con un Desert Lodge fatto di luce e lusso, di sistematica ricerca di continuità col paesaggio circostante, creando ambienti minimali e cosa forse più importante, ricercando la vera sostenibilità.
The US-based Oppenheim studio surprises us once again with a new lodge project characterized by luxury and sustainability: the Wadi Rum Resort in the desert valley of Jordan. Wadi Rum, or the Valley of the Moon, is one of Jordan’s most famous destinations, a landscape of unspoilt beauty made of desert sand and rock formations, mostly inhabited by Bedouins and a steady flow of tourists. The project aims at establishing a new reference model for design, where the structure merges perfectly with the surrounding desert, maintaining the authentic character of its culture and local habitat. The design incorporates water storage and collection systems so that the lodges can manage the available resources independently.
Contemporary architecture in the Middle East has made us accustomed to the architectural works of star-name architects, which tend to be located in the region’s urban conglomerates, with big towers and 5-star hotels or of higher rating, framed by exotic settings ensuring both cultural and economic success. But outside big cities, design takes on different forms. The project by Chad Oppenheim scattered the competition with a Desert Lodge made of light and luxury, in a constant search of continuity with the surrounding landscape, creating minimal spaces and, most of all, trying to achieve real sustainability.
