Peter Coffin’s synaesthesia

Untitled (Light Organ), 2004,Mixed media

Gallery, NY and Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, Paris – Miami Following an important exhibition held at Palais de Tokyo, American artist Peter Coffin will display a new collection of works at the Emmanuel Perrotin gallery in Paris.
The American artist creates works that investigate mental processes by triggering a kind of pseudo-mysticism towards the icons of art. He plays with memory, with interpretation and creative associations, which Coffin manipulates to produce a personal formal interpretation.
Untitled (Light organ) is a scale model of the Empire State Building. The installation is linked to an electronic keyboard and flashes with colourful lights in relation to the notes produced by pressing on the keys. This phenomenon is associated to the synaesthetic phenomena explored by Newton, Goethe and Kandinsky. Coffin uses and manipulates different means according to his artistic requirements: objects, music, photographs, systems and plants. In his works, neon and Led lights and bulbs also generate a new perception of reality.
