The prestigious Gagosian gallery in Madison avenue, New York, displays Elisa Sighicelli’s new works. Photography and videos are privileged media which Sighicelli uses to swing between immobility and movement and to observe apparently ordinary things and architectural details, boosting their intrinsic qualities which are close to abstraction. Her works explore, in a metaphysical sense, places suspended in time and the spatial dynamics of architecture around the world, deliberately avoiding all narrative structures. Through the combination of elements drawn from the material and immaterial world, Elisa Sighicelli’s works both look like still lives and enigmatic appearances.

Light is the true protagonist of the most recent works. Used as a painter’s palette, it takes on an almost sculptural quality and possesses a revealing power. Her light boxes show highly contrasting arrangements which evoke the luminous details of Renaissance paintings.
“My works are mute and time is suspended, but light indicates the desire to communicate. It freezes a moment in time that belongs to the past, which remains forever alive and present”, the artist explains. The photographs, printed by hand on matt paper rather than on clear film, are mounted on a Plexiglas structure.
Some areas of the image are concealed by the application of black paint on the rear side, while other areas are backlit so as to use light and shade to create a sculptural object where light joins every dimension.
Her work is not limited to an ideological critique of commercial images. In fact, they are imbued with the seductive impact of commercial photography, to create visions filled with mystery and charm, environments where time seems to be invited to freeze on events from which people have been removed.
