Ha appena terminato due importanti progetti, uno a Lima in Perù e l’altro a New York. Di cosa si tratta? Qual è il significato di queste opere?
L’opera presentata in Perù, Spin, è frutto di un incontro con il collezionista d’arte Juan Carlos Verme. É la prima scultura pubblica di arte contemporanea nel paese. L’opera si trova nel centro di Lima e si compone di due parti principali. La base è costituta da un grande disco in marmo nero con un diametro di 10 metri. L’acqua fuoriesce da questo disco e scorre attraverso una lamiera che ricopre l’intera superficie. Lungo tutto il perimetro del disco sono collocati 12 sottili pali in acciaio inox. All’interno di questi pali è racchiusa la seconda componente del lavoro: la luce. Si tratta di una rete di cavi elettroluminescenti che formano 6 cuboidi. Ogni cuboide di luce esegue una rotazione, presentando diversi scenari sullo sfondo della città. La sequenza accelera lentamente fino a quando i diversi cuboidi si uniscono, diventando un unico cuboide che ruota nello spazio.

E l’opera per Calvin Klein: di cosa si tratta? Qual è il significato di questo progetto?
Dopo aver visto il bellissimo spazio creato da John Pawson in cui è inserito il negozio Calvin Klein, ho proposto alla Direzione Artistica di creare un’opera che ne fosse parte integrante. In effetti, con una lunghezza di 18 metri, è la mia opera più grande. Questo lavoro, Black Beacon, è un’enorme struttura sospesa in soli tre punti del soffitto. È stata questa la vera sfida, poiché l’intera struttura pesa quasi una tonnellata. Dalla struttura in acciaio scendono una serie di pannelli a nido d’api, verniciato esternamente di bitume nero, e internamente di verde brillante; i pannelli si aprono dalla struttura in acciaio da diverse angolazioni. Una lampada ad alogenuri metallici, che si abbassa e si alza lungo un binario per tutta la struttura di 18 m, irradia luce dalle aperture dei pannelli. Queste traiettorie di luce colpiscono le pareti e il soffitto dell’ambiente, simulando il movimento della lampada sulle superfici.

You have completed two major projects, one in Lima, Peru, and one in New York
What are they? What is the significance of these projects?
The work in Peru, entitled Spin, was a result of a meeting with an art collector called Juan Carlos Verme. It is Peru’s first truly contemporary public sculpture. The work is situated in central Lima, and consists of two main parts. On the ground is a large titled disc of black terrazzo, 10 m across. Water rises out of the upper edge of this disc and runs in a sheet across the entire surface of the disc. Just outside the perimeter of the disc are 12 slim stainless steel poles. Between these poles is suspended the second main part of the work; light. This is a network of electroluminescent wires that forms 6 cuboids. Each cuboid lights in turn, presenting different compositions against the urban backdrop of Lima. The sequence slowly speeds up until these separate forms start to read as a single cuboid spinning in space.

And your art work completed for Calvin Klein: what is it? What is the significance of this project?
After seeing the incredible space designed by John Pawson, I proposed work that inhabited it entirely. In fact this is my largest sculpture to date, at 18 m long.
This work, entitled Black Beacon, is suspended from the ceiling, hanging from three pairs of points. That was a challenge, as it weighs close to a tonne. From the steel frame hangs a series of honeycomb card panels, painted with black bitumen on the outside, and lime green inside, these panels are opened out from the steel frame at different angles. A metal halide lamp, moving up and down inside the entire 18 m sculpture on a track system, throws shafts of light out from the openings between the panels. The shafts of light hit the walls and ceiling of the space, tracking across the surfaces as the light bulb moves within.
