Le Olimpiadi di Londra sono green e sostenibili. Che cosa significa? Archilight ha intervistato l’architettoMario Kaiser, Principal Design Advisor dell’Olympic Delivery Authority. La persona che supervisiona e coordina i progetti del Parco Olimpico per conto del governo inglese. A noi spiega perché i Giochi Olimpici possono diventare un modello per i grandi future events.

“La parola sostenibilità oggi ha molteplici significati. In un contesto globale, acquista una valenza sociale” spiega “l’evento è solo un’opportunità per attirare investimenti che servono alla città. Le Olimpiadi devono lasciare un patrimonio alla City, primo vero committente”.
4 sono le parole chiave che rappresentano i focus del concetto sustainable, intorno al quale è stato costruito l’evento. Primo, riqualificazione urbana: “Il progetto dell’Olympic Village è localizzato a Stratford, nell’area di Lee River Valley e coinvolge la rigenerazione di un centinaio di ettari di suoli degradati – racconta l’architetto – è un’area con un alto tasso di criminalità e di disoccupazione, vivono razze diverse, serve omogeneità urbana. Qui abbiamo investito, accelerando un processo che avrebbe richiesto venticinque anni”.

Mobilità urbana: “Sono attesi nel Parco Olimpico, cuore dei Giochi, oltre 250mila visitatori e tutti dovranno muoversi con i mezzi pubblici, non sono previste altre vie d’accesso e non esistono parcheggi. Abbiamo potenziato i servizi, sarà possibile raggiungere il parco dal centro di Londra in soli 7 minuti, ma non sarà possibile muoversi diversamente”. E specifica: “Stratford, a est di Londra, è l’area verso cui punta la strategia d’espansione della città perché qui c’è una buona possibilità di sviluppo e una buona infrastruttura di trasporto”.

Four concepts, one idea

The London Olympics are green and sustainable. What does this really mean? Archilight asked ArchitectMario Kaiser, Principal Design Advisor for the Olympic Delivery Authority. He is the person in charge of supervising and coordinating the projects for the Olympic Park on behalf of the British government. In this interview he explains us why the Olympic Games can become a reference for great events of the future.

“Today, the term sustainability has many different meanings, and in a global world it takes on a social sense” he explains “a major event is an opportunity to attract investments that will benefit the whole city. The Olympics must create a legacy for the city as its primary commitment”.

There are 4 keywords that represent the core of the sustainable concept around which the event was built. First, urban development: “The Olympic Village was built in Stratford, in the Lee River Valley area, and involved the redevelopment of hundreds of hectares of degraded land – the architect says– the area has high crime and unemployment rates, hosting many different ethnic communities and where urban homogeneity is strongly needed. We invested here, thus accelerating a process that would have required 25 years to be completed”.

Urban mobility: “The Olympic Park, the heart of the Games, is expected to accommodate 25,000 visitors who will need to move with public means of transportation, access with other means is forbidden and there are no car parks. We improved public services so that visitors can reach the Park from the centre of London in only 7 minutes and public means of transportation is the only way”. He adds: “Stratford, in east London, is where the city is expanding because this area has good growth potential and transportation infrastructure”.
