White Light! Aule illuminate a Led

To study in well-lit areas, which are made more inviting by LEDs and next-generations light sources; classrooms and recreation areas with non-invasive white light: these are the concepts implemented in the new colleges that are being built in the most modern and energy-efficient cities. LED lights not only ensure greater comfort and wellbeing, but also deliver high energy savings and are in line with new sustainable policies.

This innovation concerns primary schools, as well as training centres for managers and professionals. And a perfect example of this is the School of Management in Russia designed by the architects of Adjaye Associates, consisting of a big building complex covering 460,000 square meters, which comprises a campus, conference halls, study rooms, a cafeteria and an auditorium.

The complex consists of four rectangular buildings standing on a circular base: to ensure proper thermal isolation, these compact and squared volumes are covered in coloured aluminium panels that reflect sunlight. The interiors are very bright thanks to wide glass windows at the base of the building.
Interiors are spacious, white furnishings dominate the areas and the prevailing colours are white and grey. LED fixtures hang from the ceiling without being intrusive, perfectly complementing the minimal design of the interiors. Along the corridors and in the study rooms the light fixtures re-design the profile of spaces, while in the lobby the spotlights light up the desks and light is reflected onto the shiny grey flooring. The stairway leading to the upper floors is characterised by a playful combination of transparencies and glass.

On the upper floors, design and innovation characterise the exhibition spaces; here, the lighting fixtures are bigger and serve as decorating elements, just like the columns made in reflective material and arranged across the room. Worth mentioning is the lighting project designed for the bar, where LED circles come down from the ceiling and light up the tables.

Another interesting project is the PEGS Junior School created by McBride Charles Ryan in Melbourne. It is a structure characterised by irregular profiles, which conceals classrooms and play areas that develop vertically. LED fixtures redefine the profiles, while the walls are characterised by rectangular windows arranged on two levels that deliver a great amount of light inside the rooms. White and blue are the dominant colours for the furniture, which is minimal and simple.

Architectural lines with clean geometries and LED lights also characterise the Dar Al Kalima College, the college designed in Bethlehem and dedicated to the creative talents and artists of the future. The lighting project was developed by Disano illuminazione. Latest-generation fixtures guarantee visual comfort and energy savings. The spotlights in the common areas enhance the works exhibited by the students; for the entrance a very creative solution was developed: Montecarlo outdoor fixtures were used as suspension lamps hanging from stainless steel cables on the walls.
