This itinerary includes a zone characterized by the presence of St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City and Castel Sant’Angelo with the old and new access roads to the temple of Christianity.

Via Ottaviano
By metro A subway it is possible to reach via Ottaviano and follow it up to Piazza Risorgimento. Then you can continue directly towards Vatican Museums. If you should have at least 2-3 hours for a detailed visit to the Museum or 1 hour for limited vision of the famous Sistine Chapel and the Raphael rooms.
Piazza San Pietro
On the tomb of St. Peter – he was martyred in 64 AD in the circus of Nero that once stood here – Constantine built a temple. The basilica, with five aisles, was completed in 349 AD and over a thousand years was a center of devotion. In 1506 Pope Julius II decided to build a new basilica. Then began a long phase of projects and achievements that were perpetuated for 120 years, under several popes, with the contribution of different artists: Michelangelo, Giacomo della Porta and Domenico Fontana. It was called the Fabbrica di San Pietro. The basilica was consecrated in 1626 by Pope Urban VIII. The plaza, designed by Bernini between 1656 and 1667, is surrounded by an imposing colonnade on which are found the statues of saints. Placing the left of the obelisk, at a stone circle on the pavement, looking at the columns, you can see the perfect alignment of the four rows of columns.

Castel Sant’Angelo
Going down through Via della Conciliazione – it was opened after the Lateran Treaty in 1930 – you can reach Castel Sant’Angelo National Museum. The property, located on the left bank of the river Tiber, was connected to the other side across the bridge Elio, later called Ponte Sant’Angelo (This is an amazing pedestrian bridge we suggest to walk through in the eveining). The castle derives its present name from the bronze statue of the Archangel Michael, located on its top in the eighteenth century.
Via dei Coronari
Just Cross Ponte Sant’Angelo and reach via dei Coronari, which was for centuries the access road to St. Peter. The coronary sellers of rosaries were offering their wares to the pilgrims. The street, lined with buildings of the XV and XVI century, is home to numerous antique dealers.In Piazza San Salvatore in Lauro – so named because in ancient times there was a forest of laurels here – there is a church of the sixteenth century, to which M. Salvi, the architect of the Trevi fountain added the tower and the sacristy. You should also visit the Renaissance cloister and the refectory frescoes on the left. Then parallel to Piazza Navona we arrive in Piazza Sant’Andrea della Valle. The church, built in 1622 by C. Maderno, contains several paintings by Domenichino. Through the homonymous street you can finally reach Piazza Sant’Eustacchio.

The Church of Sant’Eustacchio, originally from the early Christian period in the Middle Ages was a center for charitable activities. On the square is a cafe where you can enjoy one of the most famous coffee in Rome. Next we come to Piazza della Minerva, so named because there was a temple dedicated to the goddess. At the center of the square there is an Egyptian obelisk supported by an elephant by Bernini. The surrounding area is formed by a maze of streets with numerous shops and workshops.
