“15 Steps to the virgin” è l’opera che Monica Bonvicini presenta a Illuminazioni, la mostra internazionale a cura della 54. Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte della Biennale di Venezia.

Diverse scalinate illuminate a LED rappresentano l’installazione firmata dalla veneziana Bonvicini. Questo lavoro è un omaggio a Tintoretto, il pittore che l’artista tanto ama, e richiama “La presentazione della Vergine al Tempio“, realizzata dal pittore veneziano nel 1552. Le scale sono infatti ispirate a quest’opera, considerata uno dei capolavori di Tintoretto.

L’opera di Bonvicini è stata collocata a chiusura della mostra, all’Arsenale, e racchiude in sé un particolare messaggio. Le scale simboleggiano lo spettacolo e qui, esposte nell’ultima sala della mostra, vogliono anche rappresentarne la fine: “Collocate in quest’ultimo spazio espositivo, rappresentano anche la chiusura di questo spettacolo che è la Biennale“.

L’artista ha voluto arricchire l’installazione con un contributo musicale. Chi entra all’Arsenale, vede l’opera mentre in sottofondo ascolta “La musica è finita” di Mina. Le scale, infatti, sono per Bonvicini anche un omaggio all’Italia: “Sono un richiamo agli spettacoli televisivi che hanno rappresentato il nostro Paese, da Canzonissima al Festival di Sanremo”.

“15 Steps to the virgin” is the title of the work by Monica Bonvicini presented at Illuminazioni, the international exhibition organised by the 54th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale.

A series of LED lighted steps form the installation signed by the Venetian artist, Bonvicini. This work is a tribute to Tintoretto, one of the artist’s favourite painters, and brings to mind the “Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple”, created by the Venetian master in 1552. The staircase, in fact, takes inspiration from this painting, which is considered to be one of Tintoretto’s masterpieces.

The work by Bonvicini has been placed at the end of the exhibition, at the Arsenale, and contains a special message within it. The staircase symbolizes the exhibition itself and, as it is displayed in the final room of the show, it also represents its ending: “Placed in this final exhibition room, it also represents the closure of the Biennale“.

The artist wished to enrich the installation with a musical contribution. Those entering the Arsenale see the work and at the same time listen to the background sound of “La musica è finita” sung by Mina. For Bonvicini, these stairs, in fact, also represent a tribute to Italy: “They are a reminder of the television shows that have represented our country, ranging from ‘Canzonissima’ to the Festival of Sanremo”.
